Liturgy - Children's Liturgy

Children's Liturgy is offered to children aged 4 to 9, every Sunday during term at 11.30 Mass, plus special events for Christmas and Easter. New volunteers (who commit to help about twice per term) are needed from time to time.

Volunteering Role Descriptor

Role:
Children’s Liturgy team member

Responsible to:
Team Leader Joyce Cullen and Parish Priest Mgr Kerr

Description of Role:
To work with the pre-school and primary school children of St Peter’s Parish in sharing the Sunday gospel at Children’s Liturgy.    

To encourage children of aged approximately 4-10 years to attend and participate fully in the children’s liturgy during Sunday Mass in school term time.

To assist in the provision of a week to week programme of activities and work sheets to expand on the Sunday gospel theme.

To encourage the children to explore the gospel theme and to take part in prayer, praise, contrition and intercession.

To liaise with their parents as necessary and ensure that all children are safely taken to and from the Church to the parish room.

To liaise with the Parish Priest, other members of the children’s liturgy team and other members of the parish.

To keep any money collected by the children for the SCIAF parish project safely and to hand it on to the Parish Priest at regular intervals.

To set up the parish room before Mass and to tidy up afterwards.

To follow the Child Protection Guidance from the Catholic Church in Scotland.

Support provided:

Initially you will partner an experienced Children’s Liturgy team member and play a supporting role during Children’s Liturgy, until you feel confident to take on the role as leader.  You will always work with at least one other team member during Children’s Liturgy, and will often have assistance from parents accompanying their own children to Children’s Liturgy, as well as a young person who is undertaking voluntary service under the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme.

A written programme for the “running order” and song sheets for songs sung at Children’s Liturgy are provided, as well as a leader’s materials book and supporting activity sheets for each child, to complement the gospel theme each week.

A Child Protection Guidance booklet and training materials and courses are provided to all team members.

Regular meetings of the team take place to offer support and friendship and to allow for the sharing of new ideas for Children’s Liturgy.

Time required:

Preparation time - 30 minutes before Mass when on duty.

Attendance at Children’s Liturgy during Mass approximately every 3 weeks during school term time.

Attending one meeting for all Children’s Liturgy team members each term.

Arranging a replacement if you are unable to attend at a particular Mass.

Initial commitment is for one year.
