Music Group

The Music Group has now been active in the parish, both in church and elsewhere, for more than 25 years; its purpose not to "perform" but to lead, encourage and stimulate parishioners to participate more fully in the Liturgy, and on other occasions too..

The Group plays at Mass on alternate Sundays, at the Christmas and Easter services, at First Holy Communions and Confirmations, at masses and services for the sick, the housebound, the bereaved, at penitential services, at the annual parish Christmas Carol Parties, at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and Jericho House and occasionally at weddings and funerals.

All ages, from the top of the Primary School to our "Golden Oldies," are represented, either as instrumentalists or as supporting singers. Currently we have violins, guitars (including classical and bass), flutes /recorders, keyboard and the human voice, all blending into a sound that many parishioners tell us they appreciate. Our music is a mixture of the traditional and the more modern and practices take place before or after Sunday Mass when "new" music is being introduced.

New members are always welcome, whether instrumentalists, learning an instrument or supporting singers. You don't have to be there for every service or event, come as often as you can. Contact Therese Stewart (447-3562), or any member of the Group (in or out of church) or Fr.Kerr.

Choir

The Organist and Choir of St Peter's Church follow a Catholic Church tradition of hundreds of years in leading the congregation in the musical parts of the Liturgy.

They play an important part in introducing new music to the congregation, something that is essential in the continual musical development of the church community.

As well as singing the hymns, we also sing the traditional sung parts of the mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Paternoster, Agnus Dei) and the Responsorial Psalm and Acclamation, when appropriate. The Organist and Choir plays and sings at the 11.30 am Mass on alternate Sundays as well as at special services during the year.

The Choir is always looking for new members so, if you would like to sing with us, then please see the Organist (Charlie Napier), any Choir member or Father Kerr, after any service at which the Choir is singing, or join us at our practices, every Thursday evening in the Church at 6.00 pm. You do not have to be able to read music. You will be very welcome.
